The Idea Behind Hjelm Dyb Festival
In 2022, the book Tolkien and the Mythical Jutland by historian Casper Clemmensen was published.
The book explores author J.R.R. Tolkien’s professional work as a philologist, much of which focused on studying the ancient cultural history of Jutland before the Danes conquered the region.
Tolkien concluded that many Jutes took part in the Anglo-Saxon invasion of England around the year 500—a historical fact now widely accepted.
In his study of the ancient Jutes, Tolkien—who loved maps—was particularly interested in old maps of Eastern Jutland. Clemmensen argues that many place names from Southern Djursland found their way from Tolkien’s research into his literary work.
The book sparked the idea of a local festival celebrating Tolkien’s connection to the places referenced in Clemmensen’s work. The festival’s content would be rooted in the inspiration Tolkien provided to generations of fantasy authors.
Ideas turned into plans. Plans turned into reality.
Reality became Hjelm Dyb Festival:
